The Pharisees were plotting to kill Jesus. He knew His time to pay our debt was not then. He quoted Psalms 82 which essentially states what you are saying: we are prideful, seeing ourselves as "gods". Furthermore this arrogance comes from the fact we know we are His children, but instead of lowering ourselves to His holiness, we act proud. Read Psalms 82.
